The Highly Qualified Professionals program provides a fast-track pathway to residence for individuals wishing to contribute to Spain's research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) sectors.

Fast processing with decisions typically made within 2–4 weeks after application submission
Long-term Residence: Valid for up to 2 years and renewable based on eligibility.
No specific investment requirement: Eligibility is based on your professional role, research, or academic involvement in Spain.
Pathway to permanent residence after 5 years of legal residence.
Citizenship after 10 years of residence in Spain, possible FAST TRACK 2 year citizenship option for certain nationalities.

Main steps
eligibility assessment
  • Holding a higher education degree or professional experience.
  • Proof of your qualifications, the job offer, and any other required supporting materials like a criminal background check and health insurance.

Application Submission for Work and Residence Visa
  • Apply for your long-stay work and residence visa at the Spanish consulate in your home country. This application will include forms, biometric data, and all supporting documents.
  • The key documents generally include your collaboration agreement, profile, qualifications, and proof of income, proof of address and health insurance.

Visa Approval and Entry to Spain
After visa approval, you will receive a residence visa valid for up to 1 year. Upon arrival in Spain, you need to register with the Foreigners Office (Extranjería) to obtain your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero), which is the Spanish foreigner’s Residency Identification Card.

Collection of Residence Card
~6-8 weeks
You will receive your TIE card after your arrival and registration. This card confirms your legal status as a resident in Spain and is typically valid for two years.
Renewal
You can apply for renewal at least 60 days before the expiry of your card.

Path to Permanent Residence
After 5 years of legal continuous residence in Spain, you can apply for long-term residence status, which allows you to remain indefinitely in Spain.

The following individuals can be included in your application:
They will need to apply for their own long-stay visas and residence permits. The duration of their permits will correspond to the primary applicant’s status. Minor children are generally registered in Spain but do not require a separate residence card.
